You can hear a bit of country influence in Andy Grammer‘s summer hit “Honey, I’m Good.”

The clap-along beat actually feels perfect for a line dance (in fact, the Houston Texans cheerleaders made one).

So when we heard that the Eli Young Band teamed up with Andy Grammer for a remix, it actually made perfect sense.

The song does tell a story, like many country songs do, and it’s an honest one that appealed to the Eli Young Band. Singer Mike Eli told Rolling Stone,

“I think Andy put it best when he said, ‘It’s not like it was rocket science,’ but everyone goes through this and to be the bigger man… I love that the song flirts with that dirty idea but goes the other way.”

Andy Grammer elaborated on the song’s message and how it expresses a very real, honest situation that many people go through.

“Everybody has that desire to be like, ‘You look really good right now,’ and everybody also has the desire to be noble. So if you can get them both in there like, ‘Yeah, she’s totally hot, and I’m still gonna be the bigger man about it,’ people are like, ‘I believe you.’ If you just go, ‘Monogamy’s awesome!,’ I don’t believe that.”

It didn’t take much to make the song into a country tune. It already had some country at its roots, so they just needed to add Eli’s vocals and some extra twangy guitars.

“The thing is, people loved this song so much already that you don’t want to change it too much,” Eli said. “Ultimately, I think we did enough to it to put our stamp on it to make it feel like ours, as well as keeping what was so special about it already.”

Bassist Jon Jones commented,

“It feels like there have been quite a few songs that have crossed over the other way from country into pop, but very rarely do you find a song that feels like it’s gonna have a chance to flip the other way.”

Listen to the country version of the song at the top of this page. Also, if you haven’t seen the music video for the original track, watch it below. It’s adorable.
